The PNG Chiefs rebrand, explained

The PNG Chiefs presented their logo and first supporter jersey at an event in Port Moresby on Oct 21, 2026, with representatives of the Papua New Guinea and Australian governments and the NRL. The club enters the NRL competition in 2028. NRL.com, RNZ, AAP and ABC News all reported the launch that day.

According to the club, the logo was designed by a team of Papua New Guinean graphic artists. The jersey features cultural drawings by local artist TABU. As this is the club's first logo, there is no earlier mark to compare it with.

The club describes four elements. The five feathers of the headpiece stand for strength, beauty, chiefly status and national pride, with the Southern Cross linking the club to the national flag. A cassowary bone stands for courage. The chief's face takes the shape of Papua New Guinea with ceremonial red paint, and kina shells stand for traditional wealth and trade.

Chief executive Lorna McPherson said: "There will only ever be one logo and one first jersey, and today we take a huge step forward in truly bringing the PNG Chiefs to life." Chair Catherine Harris called the logo and jersey "unmistakably Papua New Guinean".

In short: A first badge for PNG's NRL club: a chief's face shaped like the country, under five feathers.
