The Halo Studios rebrand, explained
Few studio names carried as much baggage as 343 Industries. On 6 October 2024, just before the final match of the Halo World Championship, the Microsoft studio that had stewarded Halo since Bungie left showed a teaser video and announced it was now Halo Studios. The rename did not arrive alone: the studio said every future Halo project would be built in Unreal Engine 5, and that several new games using it were in development.
Studio head Pierre Hintze framed it as a new chapter rather than a clean break. In his telling, Halo has had two distinct eras, the Bungie years and the 343 years, and the audience is hungry for more. The aim was not only to make development more efficient but to change the recipe for how Halo games are made. The studio described the engine switch as the first step in a broader transformation of its structure, processes, technology and culture.
The Verge put that in less diplomatic context. Its report noted that the move followed more than a year of rumours about an engine switch, a leadership overhaul at 343, layoffs and other changes. The proprietary Slipspace Engine built for Halo Infinite had become hard to use and had strained development, a lot of staff had to be dedicated simply to maintaining it, and parts of it were close to 25 years old.
The visual proof offered was Project Foundry, which the studio insisted was neither a game nor a tech demo but research and a training tool for building Halo in Unreal. Its clips showed Pacific Northwest style landscapes, frozen Coldlands, Flood blighted Blightlands and the Master Chief in Mark V armour facing an Elite. No release dates or game announcements came with it.
As naming goes, Halo Studios is blunt to the point of being almost generic, and that is the point. A number told outsiders nothing; the franchise name tells them everything. Putting the franchise name on the door tells everyone, inside and out, that the studio exists for one thing. The risk is that the rename is read as cosmetic. The engine change is what gives it substance, and the games will decide whether the new chapter is real.
In short: Same games, new name on the door, new engine underneath.
