The Delta Emulator rebrand, explained
Key people: Riley Testut (Developer, Delta) · Caroline Moore (Designer, new Delta icon)
When Apple began allowing game emulators on the App Store in April 2024, Delta, developer Riley Testut's emulator for the NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy and Nintendo DS, went straight to number one and drew millions of downloads. It had evolved from his older GBA4iOS app. The attention brought scrutiny, TechCrunch and The Verge reported.
Delta's icon was a stylised Greek letter delta, a broken purple triangle on white. On 7 May, Adobe's lawyers emailed asking Delta to find a different icon, politely suggesting it might not wish to confuse consumers or violate Adobe's rights. A day later, before Testut replied, Apple told him Adobe had alleged infringement and that his app might be at risk, The Verge reported. Testut said he explained that the mark was a delta, not an A, but agreed to change it anyway. A temporary icon went up while the final one was drawn.
The comparison was thin. Adobe's logo, The Verge noted, has used a negative-space A since 1993; TechCrunch pointed out that Adobe's mark is red and white and runs to the edge of its icon, while Delta's was purple, smaller and centred, and that the two products serve entirely different users. Neither outlet thought consumers were likely to be confused.
The final logo shipped with version 1.6 in July 2024, alongside full iPad support. It has a more fragmented look and was designed by Caroline Moore, who also creates the emulator's controller skins, The Verge and TechCrunch reported.
A forced rebrand rarely produces better work, and this one is mostly a sideways move. The real story is the asymmetry: a corporate legal team and a platform gatekeeper could make a solo developer redraw his identity in a day, over a resemblance few users would have noticed.
In short: A delta that Adobe called an A.
