The SFR rebrand, explained

In 2022 SFR, the French telecoms operator known for its red square, presented a new visual identity and a new signature: Soyez vous, be yourself. CB News reported that the brand was refocusing its communication on its fundamentals, namely its networks, its expertise and the red square brand.

The company's own statement, quoted by both CB News and Alloforfait, set the ambition: SFR wants more than ever to be the digital partner that supports people and makes life easier. Alloforfait added that, with the new slogan, the operator places the individual at the heart of its strategy.

The graphic identity was described as simpler and cleaner, built around SFR's established codes: the red square and proximity. The launch campaign, a 50 second film showing several users of the SFR network in different situations, was set to a song by the French band Téléphone, a joke that telecom marketers clearly could not resist. CB News credited the campaign and its production to outside agencies.

This is a refresh by subtraction, and it is the right instinct. SFR spent years with a reputation problem in the French market, and a louder logo would not have fixed that. Stripping the system back to one red square says the company wants to be judged on basics, which is exactly what its positioning claims.

The weakness is the slogan. Soyez vous is a phrase that could belong to a shampoo, a bank or a dating app, and individualism is the most crowded territory in consumer marketing. The red square does the heavy lifting here, as it always has. If the identity works, it will be because the mark is consistent and recognisable, not because anyone remembers being told to be themselves by their phone company.

In short: Back to the square.
