The MTS rebrand, explained

For nearly two decades MTS, Russia's largest mobile operator, was the red square with a white egg. In March 2023 the egg went. The company announced a global rebrand with a new brand architecture, positioning, logo and visual language, plus separate identities for individual products, and RIA Novosti reported the change the same day, noting that digital products and websites would switch first while signs and shop fittings would be replaced over several years as the old ones wore out.

President Vyacheslav Nikolaev explained the business logic. MTS had set out to build a digital ecosystem and had been launching new products since 2019, and a shift toward IT had changed its staff, teams, bureaucracy and corporate values. The rebrand, he said, was a logical continuation of those changes. A monolithic brand no longer worked, did not give enough flexibility and did not solve the needs of different services; the business had outgrown it. So MTS moved from a monolithic to a hybrid architecture, with sub brands for major businesses and products that have their own bright identities but clear continuity with the parent. The base of the system is now a dynamic, flexible logo designed to hold all the products.

Why kill such a famous symbol? A senior MTS brand executive answered that in an interview with Sostav. Research showed the main cue of recognition for MTS was not the egg but the colour red: people barely noticed the egg on layouts any more, and replacing it did not reduce recognition as long as red stayed. The meanings once attached to the egg, beginnings and simplicity, had been forgotten, especially by younger people who never saw the 2006 rebrand, and they no longer fitted a 30 year old market leader. Dropping it, she said, was a way to show that MTS is not only a telecom company and looks very different too. The company also promised not to spend money replacing shop signs abruptly, so the egg would not vanish overnight.

MTS's own figures show the scale: about 88 million mobile subscribers across Russia, Belarus and Armenia, more than 5,300 shops and over 13 million ecosystem customers.

Letting go of a famous symbol on the strength of research is braver than most companies manage. The insight that red, not the egg, carried recognition is exactly the kind of evidence that justifies change, and a hybrid system suits a company trying to sell banking, streaming and cloud alongside SIM cards. The risk is fragmentation: many vivid sub brands can dilute the parent unless the red does the binding work. If it does, MTS will have traded a quaint egg for something far more useful.

In short: The egg cracks, the red stays.
