The Organon rebrand, explained
Merck announced on Mar 11, 2020 that its planned spinoff of women's health, legacy brands and biosimilars would be called Organon & Co. It said use of the new company logo and brand would take effect when the spinoff was completed. Merck completed it on Jun 3, 2021, and Organon began trading on the New York Stock Exchange as OGN.
"We chose a name that will instill trust and build on the strong legacy of Organon’s commitment to innovation in women’s health," said Kenneth C. Frazier, Merck's chairman and chief executive.
Organon explains the name on its own site. The word comes from ancient Greek and means "an instrument for acquiring knowledge". It was the name of a Netherlands-based company established in 1923 that became known in women's health and was later acquired by Schering-Plough, which merged with Merck.
The logo pairs a magenta icon of dots and dashes with an Organon wordmark in blue serif capitals. Organon says the dots convey its focus on multiple conditions, with the central dot representing women's health, and the dashes represent its vision and values.
In short: Merck's women's health spin-off revived a Dutch name from 1923, with dots and dashes around a central dot.
