The Eternal rebrand, explained

Zomato said on 6 February 2025 that it would rename the listed company Eternal and unveiled a new logo. The Hindu reported that the name had been in internal use for more than two years, and that Eternal would sit above four businesses: Zomato food delivery, the quick commerce unit Blinkit, the live events business District and the kitchen supplies arm Hyperpure. Business Standard reported that the board approved the change the same day, subject to shareholders, the corporate affairs ministry and other authorities, and that the corporate site would move to eternal.com and the stock ticker would change. The Zomato app keeps its name.

Founder and chief executive Deepinder Goyal explained the timing in a letter to shareholders quoted by both outlets. After acquiring Blinkit, the company began using Eternal internally to distinguish between the company and the brand or app. It planned to rename publicly on the day something beyond Zomato became a significant driver of its future. With Blinkit, he wrote, that day had come. The Hindu noted the shift from mid 2022, when investors were sceptical of the Blinkit deal, to quick commerce led growth drawing increasing interest. Business Standard cited quarterly figures showing Blinkit revenue up 21 per cent sequentially.

Goyal also offered an unusually candid reflection on the word itself. Eternal, he said, is a powerful name that scared him to his core, a tall order carrying both a promise and a paradox. True permanence, he argued, is not built on claims of invincibility but on the understanding that the day a company believes it will last forever simply because it says so, it begins its end.

The architecture is textbook: a holding name above consumer brands, the move every platform makes once a second business stops being a side project. Keeping Zomato for the app protects one of India's best known consumer names. The chosen word is the risk. Eternal is grand, abstract and, as Goyal admitted, hard to live up to; it says nothing about food, delivery or commerce. Its saving grace is the founder's self awareness. A company that names itself forever and then warns against complacency in the same letter has at least read the room.

In short: The company grows up; the app keeps its name.
