The Strategy rebrand, explained
MicroStrategy announced on 5 February 2025 that it was now doing business as Strategy. The release, issued hours before its fourth quarter earnings call, introduced a new name, a new logo built around a stylised B for bitcoin, and orange as the primary brand colour, which the company said represents energy, intelligence and bitcoin. It also launched new websites for its software and a merchandise store.
The company called the change a brand simplification and a natural evolution reflecting its focus and broad appeal, describing itself as the world's first and largest bitcoin treasury company as well as the largest independent listed business intelligence firm. Reuters reported that the new logo was meant to emphasise its commitment to crypto. Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani told Reuters the company probably wanted to stress bitcoin as its core business and distance itself from the software arm, which he described as no longer material.
The numbers explain the shift. CNBC noted that the former enterprise software provider began buying bitcoin aggressively in 2020, that its shares had since traded mainly as a proxy for the cryptocurrency, and that it had raised billions through convertible bonds solely to buy more. It held 471,107 bitcoins at the time, the largest corporate holding in the world. Reuters added that the shares rose nearly five fold in 2024, earning a place in the Nasdaq 100 in December, even as the company reported its fourth straight quarterly loss on the day of the rebrand. CNBC also recalled that a year earlier the firm had said it would shift its focus and brand to bitcoin development.
Executive chairman and co founder Michael Saylor was expected to discuss the new brand on the earnings call.
As naming goes, this is less a rebrand than a confession. Dropping Micro removes the last echo of the enterprise software company, and the orange B leaves no doubt about the business model. That clarity is the point, and investors already priced the company that way. The trouble is the word left behind. Strategy is about as generic as a name can be, impossible to own in search and slightly ironic for a firm whose single strategy is buying one asset. The identity works only as long as the bet does.
In short: From software company to bitcoin logo.
