The Columbus Crew rebrand, explained
The club first announced a rebrand as Columbus SC with a new crest in May 2021, which USA Today covered as the front office's case for change. A week later, after talks with its supporters group, the Nordecke, the club reversed the name change.
MLSsoccer.com reported that the updated crest keeps the new design but adds the Crew name and 96, reflecting the club's place as an MLS original. The roundel it replaced read Columbus Crew SC around a black and gold checked centre.
In short: Columbus SC lasted a week.
