The Xsolla rebrand, explained

Xsolla started with payment technology for games and expanded into digital storefronts, analytics, templates and support for publishers and developers. Its work surfaces inside games as in-game currencies, cosmetic items and achievement badges, yet even many keen gamers have never heard of it. It's Nice That called it the biggest gaming company you've never heard of. The brief was to communicate everything Xsolla does to a split business and consumer audience, and to both fit in and stand out in the visually noisy world of games.

The narrative, developed with a brand writer, is summed up in the line 'All the things'. The team invented the Xsolla Archive, a fictional, infinite, liminal space between real and virtual worlds that houses every item, treasure and reward players can collect. A labelling system, the Archive's taxonomy, categorises items with recognisable graphics, giving structure to 3D illustration and helping make the platform searchable.

The look is skeuomorphic and dimensional. If items in the Archive are stored in glass boxes, a 2D grid of them in a UI is drawn to look like glass boxes, so the fiction holds. At its centre is Sol, a bubbly star mascot that It's Nice That compared to the Frutiger Aero utopias of Wii and PlayStation 3 interfaces. Sol has a fully animated 3D model and a behaviour set closer to a helpful UI assistant than a game character; her simple silhouette is echoed in a bespoke wordmark. Specialists contributed sound, programmatic tools and web design, and the work was described as ongoing.

It's Nice That called the identity extremely strong and pleasant, and core to simplifying a potentially intimidating platform.

Xsolla's own announcement, dated 10 December 2025, framed the rebrand as a commitment rather than a reaction to industry turbulence. Long associated with payments, the company said, it now wanted to be seen across monetisation, distribution, identity, live operations and compliance. Its chief marketing and growth officer, Berkley Egenes, told GamesMarket that for over 20 years Xsolla had been about making the complex seamless for developers, and the identity was showcased around The Game Awards in Los Angeles. The corporate prose is heavy going, but the visual system does the job the copy cannot: it makes a back-office company look like it belongs in games.

The Archive is a genuinely good idea for a business whose product is invisible: it turns plumbing into a place. Retro console nostalgia is a crowded seam right now, but for an audience that grew up on those menus, it is the right language.

In short: Every in-game item, archived.
