The Telefónica rebrand, explained

Key people: José María Álvarez-Pallete (Chairman, Telefónica)

Telefónica had used the same logo since 1998. In April 2021, at its general shareholders' meeting and just after turning 97, the Spanish group presented a new corporate identity to express the 'new Telefónica' from its November 2019 strategic plan: massive fibre deployment, a more sustainable and diversified model, 5G and new digital services. Chairman José María Álvarez-Pallete said it reflected a company ready for the next 100 years.

The move looked back to go forward. The new mark revives the logo created in 1984, which had also been unveiled at a shareholders' meeting, simplifying and modernising it. Five circles form a 'T', more stylised and agile than the original. The company gave the number five three meanings: this is its fifth logo; its action plan rests on five pillars; and each circle is one of five Ts, telecommunications, technology, transformation, talent and transcendence.

The identity was developed by Telefónica's in-house team with Lambie-Nairn. Transform magazine reported that it includes a blue palette meant to convey modernity and technology, and a typeface, Telefónica Sans, designed and optimised for digital use to make the brand more flexible. The logo took effect immediately in all countries where Telefónica operates and extended to units using the name, such as Telefónica Tech, Telefónica Empresas and Fundación Telefónica.

Telefónica's consumer brands, including Movistar, O2 and Vivo, were not part of this change; this is the corporate parent.

Telefónica unveiled the identity at its April 2021 shareholders' meeting, presenting it as the visible face of the strategic plan announced in November 2019. The five circle logo deliberately recalls the 1984 mark, simplified for digital use, and replaced a logotype in service since 1998. The company tied it to fibre rollout, 5G and a more sustainable, diversified model, and its chairman spoke of a Telefónica ready for the next hundred years. Reaching back to an older logo to signal the future is a confident move, and here the archive was better than what it replaced.

Reviving the 1984 dots is a good instinct; that mark had character the 1998 one lacked. The five-Ts numerology is the kind of justification written after the drawing, and the flat blue circles are close to generic. Still, as a corporate mark sitting behind consumer brands, quiet and well-made is what it needs to be.

In short: Back to 1984, in blue.
