The Google Meet rebrand, explained

Meet started life as Hangouts Meet, and its icon was a teal speech bubble holding a white video camera. On 6 October 2020 it renamed G Suite as Google Workspace and announced "new four-color icons for Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet" and the Docs editors, all from "the same family."

The new Meet icon drops the bubble. The camera itself becomes the logo, a rounded body and lens built from overlapping bands of blue, red, yellow and green. Ars Technica listed what had been lost across the set: "Gmail used to be red, Calendar used to be blue, Drive used to be green/yellow/blue, Docs used to be blue, Meet used to be teal. Now they are all multi-colored with only the shapes to tell them apart."

Ars argued the icons seemed "geared more toward being recognizable in an app store search rather than in a user’s app drawer," where one multicoloured Google icon stands out among competitors but every Google app looks alike.

Some users ranked the new icons against each other. "The new Google Calendar icon is breathtakingly bad! And yet the new Google Meet icon is worse," wrote one.

In short: The bubble burst, the camera got four colours.
