The Google Calendar rebrand, explained

When G Suite became Google Workspace on 6 October 2020, Google promised "new four-color icons for Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet" and the Docs editors, all "part of the same family." Javier Soltero, VP and GM of Google Workspace, said the brand and its icons would reflect a "more connected, helpful, and flexible experience."

Ars Technica noted that "Calendar used to be blue," like each Workspace app once had its own colour. The old icon was a blue tear-off page with a white 31. The new one puts a blue 31 on a white square and wraps it in thick blue, green, yellow and red borders, with a folded corner at the bottom right.

Ars warned that the new set "strips icons of any unique color identity, which makes them harder to tell apart." With Calendar, the complaints on X arrived as the icons rolled out in late October. "In Chrome, the new Google Calendar logo has made it nearly impossible to see the day of the month anymore," wrote Seth Wilson. "I’m really trying to retrain my brain on the new google calendar logo and it’s just not working," said another user.

Others went for comparisons. One user said it "looks like it was designed in 1993." During the week of the 2020 US election, Brandon Hassler wrote: "The biggest disappointment of this election season is the new Google Calendar logo."

In short: Four colours round a 31, and a lot of squinting.
