The Deutsche Telekom rebrand, explained

Key people: Ulrich Klenke (Chief brand officer, Deutsche Telekom)

Deutsche Telekom had grown into one of the world's biggest telecoms groups, and Design Tagebuch noted it had climbed to second place among global telecoms brands in the Brand Finance ranking. In February 2022 it adapted its brand to the strategy it calls leading digital telco, with a one-brand approach across all national companies that use the T. Chief brand officer Ulrich Klenke summed it up as one purpose, one brand architecture, one logo, one claim and one brand design.

The work was led by MetaDesign Düsseldorf, Telekom's lead agency, which had created the Liquid brand design system in 2020. The T, previously close to a classic Tele Antiqua capital, was given what PAGE called a digitally optimised makeover. The playful slanted serif ends on the crossbar disappeared, curves became more geometric and open, and the stem and arms were thickened so the letter feels more solid. The company described the T as more compact, with optimised curves and a reinforced top, trunk and foot.

The bigger change is the frame. Since 2013 the T had been flanked by four square digits; from 2018 a version with two digits had appeared on social media. Now the 1-T-1 form became the only group logo, a self-contained composition meant to work as a global mark and to be staged in context, interacting with photos, graphics and 3D space rather than sitting as a sign-off. Magenta stays, and its name would structure the product portfolio internationally. The purpose line reads: we won't stop until everyone is connected.

The new look debuted at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the end of February 2022, with a two to three year rollout, digital channels first, to save resources and money. Readers of Design Tagebuch asked whether the five-note sound logo still matched the new number of digits; Telekom said the jingle predated that link and would stay.

This is evolution done with care. Dropping two digits makes the mark compact enough for an app icon, and the heavier T holds its own at scale. Magenta, one of the most owned colours in business, does the rest.

In short: A careful tightening of one of Europe's most recognisable marks.
