The Android rebrand, explained

Key people: Jason Fournier (Brand Manager, Google)

Android's 2019 update had already made the brand more legible and put the robot at the centre of the logo. In September 2023 Google went further, aiming to make the relationship between Android devices and Google's apps and services clearer, and saying the system should stay open, iterative and inclusive.

The most noticeable change is small: after years of lowercase android, the wordmark now starts with a capital A. Google says this gives it more weight next to the Google logo, and that the letters, while keeping some curves and personality of their own, now more closely mirror Google's wordmark so the two balance when shown together. The robot, known as the bugdroid, moves from flat graphic to a 3D character, and the visuals take cues from Material design to complement Google's brand palette.

The work was done in-house at Google.

Android Police called it the platform's first brand makeover in over four years, and 9to5Google noted the 3D robot is meant to be customisable. The enthusiast audience was not convinced: on Reddit's Android forum and Hacker News many disliked both the capital A and the 3D bugdroid, calling them dated or less polished than the flat versions they replaced.

The Verge read the refresh as a reminder that Android is fun but also a serious Google product. It arrived bundled with a quarterly feature drop rather than a new OS release: a redesigned At a Glance widget, smarter scene descriptions in the Lookout accessibility app, and audio-only Zoom calls in Android Auto. Google brand manager Jason Fournier wrote that the new wordmark, with its capital A and a typeface closer to Google's own, more closely mirrors Google's logo and creates balance between the two. The 3D robot would appear in colourful variations as the occasion called for, including a furry one the reviewer admitted not liking.

Capitalising one letter sounds trivial, but it signals a real strategic shift: Android is being presented as part of the Google family rather than a parallel brand. The 3D bugdroid is friendlier and more toy-like, which suits the platform's playful side. The cost is distinctiveness; the closer Android's type gets to Google's, the less it has a voice of its own.

In short: One capital letter and a 3D robot, pulling Android closer to Google.

Rationale

The system should reflect Android's ethos of being "open, iterative and inclusive" and balance Android with Google when shown together.

Quote

“We believe our brand system and how we show up visually to the world as Android should reflect Android’s core ethos of being open, iterative and inclusive.”
