The AbbVie rebrand, explained

Abbott announced the name on Mar 21, 2012. It said the name combines Abbott with "vie", which references the Latin root "vi" meaning life, and that the logo and graphic identity would be unveiled when the new company launched.

Chairman and chief executive Richard A. Gonzalez explained the first half: "The beginning of the name connects the new company to Abbott and its heritage of pioneering science."

Abbott completed the separation, and AbbVie launched as a new biopharmaceutical company on Jan 2, 2013. The company said it started with about 21,000 employees in more than 170 countries. "Today AbbVie launches with an outstanding portfolio, a solid pipeline and enthusiastic people who will serve patients and deliver growth," Gonzalez said.

The logo is a lowercase abbvie wordmark in dark navy, set in a rounded sans serif. As this is the first logo of a new company, there is no earlier AbbVie mark to compare it with.

In short: Abbott's pharma spin-off, named from Abbott plus the Latin root for life, in a lowercase navy wordmark.
