The Z.ai rebrand, explained

Zhipu AI, one of China's best funded AI start ups, appeared in July 2025 under a new name: Z.ai. Mint, citing Reuters and Bloomberg, described Zhipu as a firm now rebranded as Z.ai and preparing to release GLM-4.5, an upgrade to its flagship open source model, as part of an effort to position itself as a serious contender globally. CNBC reported the launch on 28 July, introducing the company as Z.ai, formerly known as Zhipu.

The name arrived with a price war. Z.ai said GLM-4.5 would cost less than DeepSeek to use: 11 cents per million input tokens against 14 for DeepSeek R1, and 28 cents per million output tokens against 2.19 dollars, according to CNBC. Chief executive Zhang Peng told the network the model was about half the size of DeepSeek's and needed only eight Nvidia H20 chips to run. The company framed it as agentic, breaking tasks into sub tasks to complete them more accurately.

The context explains the urgency. CNBC noted that OpenAI had named Zhipu in a June warning about Chinese AI progress, that the US had placed the company on its entity list, and that it had raised more than 1.5 billion dollars from backers including Alibaba and Tencent. Mint placed the launch in a wave of Chinese open source releases from rivals such as Moonshot and StepFun, and reported that the firm was weighing a move of its planned IPO from mainland China to Hong Kong. A few weeks later the South China Morning Post, describing Z.ai as a unicorn formerly known as Zhipu AI, reported that its GLM models had been adapted for Huawei's Ascend and Kirin chips, part of the push for domestic technology self sufficiency.

None of the sources quote the company explaining the rename, so the reasoning has to be read from the timing.

Read that way, the logic is plain. Zhipu is hard for non Chinese speakers to say or remember, and the company was courting global developers with cheap open models. Z.ai is short and typeable, though it also sounds like a placeholder and says little about what makes the company different. A name built for a developer audience is reasonable; whether it can carry weight in markets wary of a company on a US restrictions list is another matter.

In short: Zhipu, shortened for export.
