The Wind Tre rebrand, explained

Italy's Wind and 3 had spent three years integrating before they became one brand. On 6 March 2020 the operator launched WINDTRE as its single consumer brand, retiring the separate Wind and Tre marks, and presented a refreshed look for WINDTRE Business at the same time. Corriere Comunicazioni reported the launch alongside the company's claim of Italy's largest 5G ready network.

The new mark is orange, with what the company called rounded and liquid shapes. The release tied the look to a positioning idea: technology that feels welcoming and much closer to people's everyday lives. Chief commercial officer Gianluca Corti said a telecom company should act as a facilitator of human relationships, and that WINDTRE aimed to bring people together through technology and support them through daily challenges, with new commercial offers and a renewed store network.

Chief executive Jeffrey Hedberg called the single brand a defining inflection point, the beginning of the beginning for consumer and business customers. He credited three years of work integrating and modernising the network, systems and customer touch points, and pointed to an investment of 6 billion euros over five years in innovation and infrastructure, best reflected, he said, in the new network. The company cited around 20,000 5G ready transmission sites and network tests by the consultancy umlaut. A new corporate site and a dedicated brand page went live the same day.

Hedberg also alluded to uncertain times, arguing that reliable connectivity would be decisive for customers and the country.

Merging two brands that customers already knew is always a trade, and a single warm colour is a pragmatic way to signal something new. The liquid shapes are friendly but generic, closer to a consumer app than a national network, and a name built by gluing the two old ones together reads as a merger compromise rather than a fresh idea. Still, one clear brand beats two half brands, and the company was right to pair the change with tangible network claims rather than launch a logo on its own.

In short: Two brands poured into one orange one.
