The OnePlus rebrand, explained
On 18 March 2020 OnePlus revealed a new logo and visual identity. Android Central noted it was the first time the company had changed its brand identity, and 9to5Google reported that the logo had already been spotted passing through regulatory offices before the official reveal.
The company explained the changes in a blog post quoted by 9to5Google. The goal was a clearer association between logo and brand while improving legibility and visibility. To get there it increased the logo's thickness, gave the number 1 some curve so it is more immediately recognisable, and slightly enlarged the plus sign as a nod to its community. It also removed the solid box behind the word OnePlus and made the weight consistent across the logo.
Typography and colour followed. The Never Settle tagline was restyled with a new font, new letter spacing and mixed case instead of capitals. Android Central reported a palette centred on OnePlus red, with an updated secondary palette of cyan, green, magenta, indigo and yellow. The company said in-house creatives and an outside agency had worked for more than seven months on the refresh, and its global creative director said OnePlus was not changing who it is but reinforcing the spirit of Never Settle.
These are small, sensible corrections. The old boxed wordmark was clumsy at small sizes, and a curved 1 is more distinctive than a straight one.
Android Central described the first change to the company's identity as restrained. The 1 became curvilinear for readability, the logotype's weight was rebalanced, and the plus inside the box was enlarged as a nod to the community credited with OnePlus's success. Red stayed central, joined by a secondary palette of cyan, green, magenta, indigo and yellow, plus a more legible font. The work took over seven months with in house creatives and an outside agency. It is a tidy evolution for a brand whose fans were part of the pitch from the start.
The brighter palette is the larger shift, giving a phone maker known for red and black more range in marketing. It is an evolution designed not to scare a loyal community, and it does that.
In short: A rounder one.
Rationale
Create a clearer association between logo and brand while improving legibility and visibility.
