The Vivid Seats rebrand, explained

Vivid Seats, the Chicago ticket resale marketplace founded in 2001, announced on 29 July 2021 what it called an extensive brand refresh inspired by the energy and passion of live event fans, with a new logo and a redesigned website and app built around personalisation and simplicity. The refresh launched alongside an overhauled Vivid Seats Rewards programme, and followed the company's announcement that it would go public through a merger with the special purpose acquisition company Horizon Acquisition Corporation.

TicketNews' Dave Clark covered the Vivid Seats change alongside SeatGeek's rebrand the same week. He noted that both looks carried a retro flair, with Vivid Seats having something of a 1980s vibe, and that the two companies somewhat traded places on colour: Vivid Seats swapped a red-heavy palette for one featuring more pastel and blue tones, while SeatGeek moved toward black and red. Clark linked the Vivid Seats refresh to its effort to differentiate itself from competitors ahead of its planned listing.

The official release said little about the logo itself and much more about loyalty: every customer earning 10 percent of value on ticket purchases, stamps toward free tickets and three status tiers. Chief executive Stan Chia's quote did not mention the brand at all.

That is the telling detail. A rebrand timed to a SPAC listing and sold mainly through a rewards programme reads as investor packaging as much as fan design. Moving off red was a real change, but when a direct competitor rebrands the same week and the trade press's main observation is that you swapped colours with it, differentiation was only half achieved.

In short: Red out, pastel in, just before the SPAC.
