The Ubuntu rebrand, explained

The Circle of Friends is the face of Ubuntu, a ring of figures in white on orange. In March 2022 Canonical announced that the mark would get an upgrade alongside Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, the long term support release due on 21 April, and Linuxiac reported the change the same week, noting that the new logo would arrive with that release and gradually replace the old one everywhere.

Canonical was clear that this was not a revolution but an evolution. The white on orange colour scheme stayed. What changed was the drawing: sleeker lines that bind the three friends more closely together. The company argued that respectful continuity mattered, but that the updated version was leaner, more focused and more sophisticated.

The most visible fix is in the heads. Now they sit inside it, facing each other, which Canonical said makes a little more sense because they connect more directly. The mark also gets a new container. Instead of a conventional square or circle, it sits on a tall rectangular orange tag, which the company said lets the orange express itself and gives a recognisable colourful mark across media. And the symbol moves from a tiny superscript beside the wordmark to a large, leading presence.

The rollout was practical rather than theatrical. Ubuntu's own changelog for the installer in the 22.04 cycle records an update to the logo on the Install Ubuntu screen, and Wikimedia Commons lists the file as the official logo since March 2022, first used in that release.

For a community driven operating system, restraint was the right instinct. The Circle of Friends carries a lot of goodwill, and a radical redraw would have triggered the kind of forum outrage open source projects know well. Pulling the heads inside the ring is a genuine improvement: the figures now read as a closed, connected group. The orange tag is the bolder call. It gives Ubuntu a shape it can own on a crowded desktop, though a tall rectangle is an unusual container that can look like a stray label when shrunk. Overall it reads as a confident tidy up of an icon that did not need reinventing.

In short: Friends, pulled closer.
