The Thumbtack rebrand, explained

Thumbtack spent its first decade as plumbing rather than a brand: a marketplace that matched customers with local professionals for jobs around the home. In 2018 it decided the plumbing needed a face. GDUSA reported that the rebrand was largely done in house, led by Thumbtack's creative director with help from an outside digital agency and an animation focused studio.

The timing was tied to product. TechCrunch reported that the redesign soft launched in early May 2018 and was presented at a San Francisco event for about 300 of the service professionals on the platform, alongside a new feature called Instant Results. That feature used data from 200,000 pros to show customers the 30 best matches for a request. Thumbtack's own design systems team later wrote that the brand officially launched on 1 May 2018, after months of rebuilding colour, type and icon toolkits and thousands of scripted changes to the website.

The creative director told GDUSA that as the product evolved, the company grew out of its utilitarian orange wardrobe, and that the new identity gave a wider toolbox for brand expression and better positioned Thumbtack for its role. The brand promise to customers and pros was summed up as ease, possibility and accomplishment.

The execution follows from that promise. Orange gave way to a blue palette. Layouts lean on simple language, plenty of white space and the work of local pros. Photography shows real people doing real things, aiming at the satisfaction of crossing something off a to do list. The typeface, Mark, was chosen as straightforward and utilitarian. And the logo itself changed object: the old pushpin became an actual tack, finally matching the company's name. The design team used the moment to rebuild its Thumbprint design system from scratch, which it later open sourced.

Correcting the pushpin is the kind of fix that sounds pedantic but matters: a brand named after an object should probably show that object. Blue was a safer choice than orange and pushes Thumbtack closer to the trustworthy fintech look many marketplaces adopted, which reduces distinctiveness. The stronger move is the photography. In a category full of stock images of smiling handymen, committing to real pros doing real jobs is a credible signal of trust, and trust is what a stranger in your kitchen has to earn.

In short: Finally, an actual tack.
