The t3n rebrand, explained

t3n began in 2005, published by yeebase media, and as Design Tagebuch's Achim Schaffrinna pointed out, its name comes from the Typo3 content management system the magazine originally covered. By 2018 it had become a magazine for digital business and future technology, and with its 51st issue, Horizont's Katharina Brecht reported, it gave itself a new look after ten years. The rotor that had decorated the logo was gone, and the colours and type got a fresh coat.

The new mark is a single typographic idea. Chief executive Andreas Lenz, quoted by Horizont, said he valued the logo's compact unity and that it felt more adaptable and modern, and explained the coding of the letters: the 3, which only emerges as a negative form between the t and the n, challenges the viewer; the intersection becomes a connection, and the space in between would be brought to life by the community in the months and years ahead. Design Tagebuch added that the visual renewal included a new typeface and an altered shade of red, alongside a sharpened brand profile.

Both outlets credit the same team: the Hamburg agency Kolle Rebbe, its design unit Korefe around Alan von Lützau, and t3n art director Jan Heidemann. They developed a strategic positioning, a house typeface, the new colour, the logo and a system for sub-brands. The strategy was to turn t3n into a platform for digital pioneers, thinkers, entrepreneurs and makers, through a planned community called the Pioneers Network. Lenz joked that t3n was now 13 and, as is usual in puberty, big changes were due.

Schaffrinna was enthusiastic about the mark, calling it a very fine wordmark that works as a symbol thanks to the embedded numeral, distinctive, bold, compact and suited to digital media. His objection was to the name. Typo3, he noted, had fallen to about 1.5 percent of the global market and around 13 percent in Germany, so keeping t3n tied the brand to a dying system, and the redesign may have missed the moment to rename.

He is right on both counts. The negative space 3 is one of the cleverest small marks of its year, and it fixes the old logo's clutter at a stroke. But it is clever about a name that no longer means anything, and a community brand needs a story its members can tell. A beautiful puzzle is not quite that.

In short: A 3 made of nothing.
