The Scotiabank rebrand, explained

For years Scotiabank signed off with its Flying S, a red S wrapped around a globe, next to the name in red. The bank's own history says the globe stood for the world: in 2019 "the globe within the Flying S is replaced with a solid dot."

The refresh was rolled out in May 2019. Campaign Canada reported "a new logo and wordmark, as well as a customized font and a much greater use of colour." Chief marketing officer Clinton Braganza said the aim was to make the system "more digital and screen friendly," with "a refined 'Flying S', a Scotia font, a more modern, confident and legible wordmark."

The wordmark now leads. Scotiabank's Mexican brand page calls it "nuestra brandmark principal" (our main brandmark), while the Flying S is kept for small digital spaces such as the website and app. The bank also began using the shorter name Scotia in marketing for the first time.

The identity was developed by OneMethod, sister agency to the bank's creative agency of record Bensimon Byrne. OneMethod describes the idea as inverting the brand "from the red bank with the colourful type, to the colourful bank that is rooted in red."

Customers mostly noticed the new app. "Great new look," one wrote on X, while another missed the globe: "The previous Scotiabank logo was fine - the center was the world."

In short: The globe left the S and the wordmark took the lead.
