The Robinhood rebrand, explained

By 2020 Robinhood had helped make commission free trading the industry norm and was adding cash management and fractional shares. In August it unveiled what it called a bold evolution of its brand, a new visual identity meant to complement the app's interface. The company said the work had taken more than a year, drawing on ideas from self driving car makers, animation studios and urban planners, and imagining a more equitable world in which everyone can build wealth and collective participation in finance is a source of power.

The Brand Identity reported that Robinhood, one of the fastest growing brokerages in history by new accounts, wanted an identity befitting an industry leader rather than the new kid on the block. It worked with the US studio Collins, which the One Club's awards archive also credits. Collins built the concept around imagining the world fifty years ahead, arguing that to invest is to imagine a brighter future. Illustrations by many artists and bold information graphics turn jargon like ETFs, fractional shares and bull markets into relatable pictures, and layouts borrow from graphic novel panels and the fine linework of clerical forms.

Type got unusual care. Robinhood's team had already picked Maison Neue from Milieu Grotesque; Collins found an older version in the foundry's archive, commissioned updates including a custom R, and renamed it Capsule Sans. The company described it as warm, legible and precise, paired with Nib, a welcoming, whimsical serif. Creative director Ben Crick explained the logo change: the angle of the old feather left awkward negative space beside the wordmark, so moving it to the other side and switching to sentence case gave better balance, and the capital R felt more sophisticated. Robinhood also refreshed its colour, accent palette, iconography and layout system.

A utopian brand about brighter futures is a bold promise for a trading app, and it invites the question of whether the product lives up to it. On craft, though, this is strong work. The feather fix is small but correct, the typography is thoughtful, and the illustration programme gives a finance app a genuinely distinctive voice instead of stock photos of smiling couples.

In short: Fixing the feather and imagining fifty years ahead.
