The Microsoft Copilot rebrand, explained

Key people: Yusuf Mehdi (Consumer CMO, Microsoft)

By mid-2023 Microsoft had a copilot for almost everything: GitHub for code, Microsoft 365 for work, Bing and Edge for search, Windows for the PC. On 21 September, at an event in New York, consumer chief marketing officer Yusuf Mehdi announced that they would become one experience, Microsoft Copilot, your everyday AI companion. As a first step, Microsoft said, it was unveiling a new visual identity, the Copilot icon, and a consistent user experience.

The icon is an abstract, ribbon-like loop in a multicolour gradient, which Microsoft describes as a partnership between people and AI. Microsoft Design, which created it in-house, wrote that the aim was to use colour and iconography to build and reinforce an understanding of the AI moments across its products. Its broader argument was that AI should move from autopilot to copilot, augmenting people rather than replacing them, and that the visual language had to make that relationship legible. A Microsoft 3D designer said the team also built animated 3D variations of the mark and kept evolving it.

The rollout started in Windows 11 on 26 September 2023, with Copilot on the taskbar and Windows+C as a shortcut, then reached Microsoft 365 Copilot when it became generally available to enterprises on 1 November. In November, Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise were folded into the same Copilot brand.

Computerworld called it a friendly and approachable new logo, and The Verge's coverage focused on the sprawl of products it now had to cover. Computerworld also noticed that Windows+C had once launched Cortana.

The Verge's launch report showed what the branding was really doing: unifying several formerly separate assistants under one name across Windows 11, Microsoft 365, Outlook, Edge and Bing. Yusuf Mehdi called it a handshake between you and technology, available when needed and out of the way when not, and Copilot branded features would turn up even in Photos and Paint. When a single mark has to sit inside that many products, it has to work as a badge more than a logo. Scale, not personality, was the brief.

As a symbol it does what Microsoft needed: it is soft, unthreatening, colourful and unmistakably not a robot. But it belongs to the generic gradient language that every AI product reached for in 2023, and its real job, marking AI features across dozens of apps, is a navigation problem more than a branding one.

In short: A friendly gradient ribbon that unified Microsoft's AI, in the same colours as everyone else's.

Rationale

Colour and iconography signal AI moments across Microsoft products; the mark is described as an abstract partnership between people and AI.

Quote

“From a visual perspective, we wanted to use things like color and iconography to create and reinforce an understanding of the AI moments across Microsoft products.”
