The Menulog rebrand, explained

Menulog, the Australian and New Zealand food delivery platform, had long used green branding and a chef-hat logo, unique among Just Eat's markets. In June 2020, after Just Eat merged with Takeaway.com, the company announced it would switch to the same logo and branding used by the group's platforms overseas.

NZ Herald's Aimee Shaw reported the reasoning from managing director Morten Belling. Being part of the Just Eat group, he said, Menulog had always had a green logo that was unique to Australia and New Zealand; the aim now was to move away from that and leverage the global network for more recognition, not just on brand but through faster investment in products and technology. Belling said the shared look would let Menulog link with global sister apps, so travellers could use the local app when international travel resumed.

The company's own announcement, carried by Scoop, put it in one line: Menulog would change from green to orange that month to align with the group. Belling called turning orange an exciting part of the brand's evolution and promised a significant investment in marketing to grow orders for the more than 900 restaurants on its New Zealand platform.

This is a logo change decided in a spreadsheet, and that is not a criticism. A regional brand inside a global group gains little from looking unique and a lot from looking like the app travellers already have. The loss is character: a chef hat said food, while the group symbol says corporate parent. Belling's own framing gives it away, presenting brand recognition and shared technology as the same benefit. For Menulog's customers, the honest message was simply that the green one now belongs to the orange one.

In short: Green chef hat out, group orange in.
