The Mail.Ru rebrand, explained
For Russian internet users the orange @ on blue was as familiar as a postbox. In June 2018, as its email service approached its 20th birthday, Mail.Ru Group presented a redesign of its mail service along with a new logo. Sostav reported the change alongside a new product concept called EGO, which used machine learning to sort letters, fight spam and suggest replies. The company's own tech news site called it the first radical update of the logo in ten years: the .Ru was gone, the lettering had changed and the @ sign gained a gradient.
In October the portal and its sister services formally adopted the new visual style. The announcement said the colours had become brighter and richer, and the logo more concise and adaptive, so that design kept pace with technical change and helped the company speak to users in a consistent tone. Design director Yuri Vetrov explained the thinking. The @ was the best known element of the brand, so the team kept it and made it simpler, clearer and more modern. The .ru was dropped because it did not affect recognition, and losing it made the main logo simpler and product names easier to write, such as Mail News or Mail Cloud. The logo also became adaptive, so names could appear in short form with the @ alone or in full.
The redesign sat inside a broader product push. Sostav listed features such as grouping shop emails by order, unsubscribing from newsletters inside the inbox, and paying traffic fines, phone bills and other services directly from mail. The company presented the visual change as one stage of planned changes supporting its strategy of making smart, useful and safe services.
The outcome is sensible evolution for a mark with this much recognition. Keeping the sign and stripping the clutter is the right instinct, and losing the .ru removes an anachronism that the company itself said no longer earned its place; the domain was a reminder nobody needed. The gradient is very much of its year and will date, and the brighter blue is more energetic than distinctive. But a brand this familiar gains little from shock, and this refresh changes just enough to look current while leaving the @ exactly where users expect it.
In short: Lose the .ru, keep the @.
