The Indeed rebrand, explained

By 2021 Indeed called itself the world's leading job site, used by job seekers and employers in 60 countries and 28 languages since its start in 2004. Yet its own design team admitted it had been missing something many competitors already had: a brand identity. The company had expanded its design piece by piece whenever it saw a way to make finding work or hiring easier, but never the whole system. In February 2021 it announced what it called the biggest update to its brand identity in the company's history.

The process is unusual. Indeed's design blog said the company first worked with several external branding agencies, whose proposals had compelling executions but none of which captured a purpose that felt authentically like Indeed. So it looked inward, forming a dedicated in-house Brand Systems team drawn from UX, product, design system, content strategy and visual design. Three priorities guided the work: clarify who Indeed is for job seekers and employers, honour its origin while inspiring its future, and distinguish the company in an iconic way. Changes were tested against the mission with user research in targeted segments before rolling into the product design system.

The visible logo barely moved; the lowercase wordmark stays, and the brand guidelines allow the i to stand alone on social accounts and app store pages. The change is in the system. Over a year the team built a two-typeface approach. Indeed Sans, a custom humanist sans serif in five weights with true italics, developed with an outside type studio, handles expressive moments in marketing, and Indeed said its shapes, reminiscent of handwriting, add warmth, clarity and positivity. The open-source Noto Sans handles product surfaces, chosen for its coverage of many languages and its legibility for people of all reading levels. A conversational voice with accessibility-based writing rules runs across both.

The launch was public. Indeed's first Super Bowl commercial, The Rising, made with 72andSunny and aired during a historic unemployment crisis, cast real job seekers and set the new typographic treatment around the mission statement. Communication Arts quoted the brand's marketing lead saying the aim was for job seekers to feel seen, and that the film was made in nine weeks under Covid restrictions.

This is a brand built from the product outward, and it shows: careful, legible and inclusive rather than striking. Keeping the familiar wordmark was wise for a name people type into a search bar every day. The risk of an in-house system is blandness, but for a utility that people use at stressful moments, calm and clear is the right brief.

In short: Calm, legible, and built from the product out.

Rationale

Indeed built "a complete brand and design system" across product and marketing so each moment "feels distinctly like us", introducing custom humanist Indeed Sans while keeping the lowercase wordmark and arc.
