Cleveland Cavaliers

Rebrand · 2 Jun 2022

The primary logo dropped the sword that ran through the C and the navy outline. The C itself stays in wine, now with a simple drop shadow in a metallic gold that replaces the old mustard yellow.

The Cleveland Cavaliers rebrand, explained

The Cavaliers introduced the new logo collection on 2 June 2022, a day after two of the logos appeared early on the team's website. It was the first major identity change led by Daniel Arsham, the Cleveland-born artist who became the club's creative director in 2020.

The team said the set was reduced to four contemporary graphics that pull cues from different eras. Wine stays, mustard yellow and navy are gone, and the gold returns to the reflective shade of the early 1980s and the 2003 to 2010 uniforms.

WKYC noted that the C kept its shape but gained a simpler drop shadow, and that a 1980s-style "Cavs" wordmark with the V doubling as a hoop joined the set. The switch was complete for the 2022 to 23 season, with new uniforms that summer.

In short: Sword out, real gold back.

“In thinking about the next chapter of where to go with the design, the approach was to compose distilled versions of the logos to create a refreshed identity.”
