The Microsoft Azure rebrand, explained

Microsoft announced the change on 7 May 2021 in a short Azure blog post by senior product marketing manager Erin Zefkeles. The Azure A icon would roll out in product experiences and across related sites over the coming weeks. The company said the new icon represents the unity of Azure within the larger Microsoft family of product icons, and that it is part of the Fluent Design System, crafted to look familiar to customers while representing the agile future of the business.

The scope matters. A clarification added on 20 May said the icon is used most commonly to denote Azure in architecture diagrams and product experiences, and that Azure's primary logo continues to be the Microsoft four square. This is a product icon, not a corporate identity, and the clarification exists because people treated it as the latter.

Redmondmag's Kurt Mackie reported on the same day that Microsoft was changing the Azure icon from its cluster of four squares to a blue A image, in line with Fluent Design and other current Microsoft icons. Microsoft invited public comment through a feedback forum, and Mackie noted that one early respondent on Twitter said the new icon looked like the Autodesk icon. Eleven days later, David Ramel at Visual Studio Magazine reported that the forum had received no backlash at all, in fact no mention, contrasting this with the developer revolt that forced Microsoft to reverse a Visual Studio Code icon colour change in 2017.

The quiet reception tells you something. The old icon was a fragment of the Microsoft logo, which made Azure look like a corporate department rather than a platform. The folded A at least gives the cloud business its own glyph, and it sits inside the wider Microsoft icon family the company says it was built to join. It is also generic: a blue gradient letter folded like paper is exactly what every software company drew in 2021, and the Autodesk comparison is not unfair. Microsoft's own language, growth mindset and agile future, is the sort of copy that makes an icon sound more important than it is. Developers, wisely, did not bother to argue.

In short: A letter of its own, at last.
