The Yandex rebrand, explained

Yandex changed its logo overnight. CNews reported that the new mark, written entirely in Cyrillic, appeared on the search engine's site in the night from 24 to 25 August 2008, and PCNEWS ran the company's announcement the same morning. For years the brand had been spelled Яndex, a hybrid of one Russian letter and five Latin ones; now it read Яндекс.

The company explained the history in its official blog, as quoted by CNews. The word Yandex was originally coined as the name of a technology and, like a file name, it was naturally written in Latin letters as yandex. It then became Яndex, where the Я underlined the search engine's knowledge of the Russian language. PCNEWS added that the first professional logo for the search engine was created in 1997 and had since changed mostly in the drawing of the letters.

The reasons given were practical and linguistic. According to PCNEWS, the switch to Cyrillic was meant to make the logo easier to read and to write. A survey commissioned by the company found that the word was associated with search and other internet services and was identified correctly however it was spelled, and Yandex had been granted the status of a well known trademark. The company's view was that Яндекс had become part of the Russian language, declined like any other noun without difficulty, while the composite Яndex looked strange in Russian text and was awkward to type on a keyboard. CNews summed up the decision the same way: the leadership believed the word Yandex had become part of the Russian language.

This is the rare rebrand driven by usage rather than ambition. The Latin hybrid was a clever artefact of the early internet, when Russian sites lived in an English speaking technical world and a single Я signalled local expertise. By 2008 the company was dominant at home and the trick had become a typing nuisance. Spelling the name in its own alphabet is an act of confidence: it assumes recognition is secure enough that the brand no longer needs to explain itself. The cost is international legibility, since Яндекс means nothing to a reader without Cyrillic. For the home market, though, it was simply the honest spelling, and it arrived at the right moment.

In short: Spelled in its own alphabet at last.
