The Upwork rebrand, explained
Upwork, the freelance talent marketplace, unveiled a refreshed visual identity and a global design system in October 2024. LBB and Creative Bloq both report that the work came from NOT Wieden+Kennedy, the design and branding arm of Wieden+Kennedy, which Upwork appointed after a competitive pitch. The brief, per LBB, was to raise global awareness and differentiation through a more cohesive brand and product experience, so that everything from a social post to the click that marks a project complete would feel unmistakably Upwork.
The organising idea is A new dimension of work: a world where companies gain agility through access to talent anywhere, and where work fits into people's lives rather than the other way round. To express it, the agency chose a sleek, minimalist system meant to convey constant forward momentum. A new typographic system with dimensional treatments sits on a purpose built fluid grid that allows endless permutations of shape and image. The palette was streamlined to build recognition, with added depth, dynamism and touches of glimmer to separate Upwork from competitors.
Motion does the heavy lifting. The grid animates in reaction to content, the angled typography suggests looking ahead, and colour now runs on gradients rather than flat blocks so that it is always moving. Creative Bloq argued that this is the lesson of the project: movement is built into the system rather than bolted on later as an animated logo, which keeps the language consistent from social posts to the product interface.
The process took 18 months, with interviews with employees and customers and a review of hundreds of touchpoints. Upwork group creative director Bryan Harvey said the aim was a suite of tools and principles that could express the brand in many ways while driving consistency everywhere. Adam Rix, head of NOT W+K, described Upwork as building a world of work that is fluid and adapting to people's needs.
The strategy is sound: a marketplace lives in its product, so a system that behaves the same in an ad and a dashboard is worth more than a new logo. The vocabulary, though, is the standard tech kit of 2024. Gradients, glimmer and dimensional type say momentum, but they say it for half of Silicon Valley. Upwork's distinctiveness will come from how strictly it applies the system, not from the system itself.
In short: Work, now in motion.
