The T-Bank rebrand, explained
Tinkoff's name and crest came from its founder, Oleg Tinkov, who started it in 2006. Vedomosti noted that Tinkov is designated a foreign agent in Russia, and that in 2022 Vladimir Potanin's Interros bought 35 percent of the parent TCS from his family. The brand change came in two steps. In February 2024 the logo changed, the crest replaced by a yellow shield bearing a T, as Interfax and Vedomosti reported. On 5 June 2024 the name followed: Tinkoff became T-Bank.
The parent TCS Holding explained the move in a statement quoted by Interfax and RIA Novosti. The company wanted to move away from the family style naming that was once fashionable and replace it with something more concise and modern. It also wanted to scale into international markets, and saw T-Bank as a universal name that would be recognisable wherever it went next. The letter T, it said, becomes a recognisable visual element across products and services: you see the T with the shield and immediately know it means the bank and its ecosystem.
Chief executive Stanislav Bliznyuk told Vedomosti that customers already fully associate the company with the T and the shield, and that this underpinned a strategy to make the letter a universal visual attribute. Product names followed: Tinkoff Black became simply Black, the broker became T-Investments and the insurer T-Insurance. The bank said the colour palette, much of the visual system and the slogan, roughly He is the only one, would stay.
Rollout was phased. Online channels and advertising switched on 5 June with a new TV campaign along the lines of was Tinkoff, now T-Bank. The website and app came first, then legal names, card and ATM designs and envelopes, with signage updated over several months. The bank told customers that almost nothing would change for them.
Brand consultants quoted by Vedomosti argued that keeping the colour, the shield, the T and the slogan would ensure continuity and that customers had long been ready. They are right. Splitting the change into a logo step and a name step let the new symbol earn recognition before the old name disappeared. The black and yellow shield is strong and simple, if a little generic. The official story is about modernity and global reach, but the founder's status, which Vedomosti notes in the same story, is context few readers will ignore.
In short: From surname to single letter.
