The Roblox rebrand, explained

In August 2022 Roblox updated its logo across the platform. Chief executive David Baszucki explained the thinking in a company blog post, which PCGamesN quoted at length.

The defining feature of the Roblox wordmark is its tilt, which Baszucki said represents building, progression and motion. The aim was to keep the equity of that tilt while reflecting how the platform had evolved. The update introduced new custom letterforms, lighter in weight and more modern. The second 'o' returned as a letter, putting more focus on the tilt. The tilt itself was slightly refined. PCGamesN noted that the small square inside the larger one had grown a little in relative size. Baszucki said the wordmark reflected the company's ambition to be a human co-experience platform for all ages and its mission to bring optimism and civility to over a billion people.

PCGamesN found the bigger story in the accompanying tagline, 'Reimagining the way people come together', which replaced 'Powering Imagination', announced in 2015. It pointed out that the line speaks of people rather than children or kids, at a time when Roblox was courting older audiences with concerts and metaverse experiences featuring high-end fashion brands. It suggested the change might also reassure investors who still struggled to see Roblox's appeal beyond a game for children, and concluded that, though the rebrand itself might not seem like much, it signalled a company maturing as it broadened its audience.

That reading feels right. The design changes are small and sensible: lighter letters age better, and the restored 'o' makes the name more legible.

PCGamesN read the refresh as a company growing up. The tilted square kept its place, its inner square slightly enlarged, while the letters became lighter and more modern, and David Baszucki explained that the tilt stood for building, progression and motion and was worth keeping. The second o came back as a letter, which gave the tilt more focus. A new tagline, Reimagining the way people come together, replaced Powering Imagination from 2015, and the outlet noticed it said people rather than kids. The rebrand speaks as much to investors and older players as to the children who built the platform.

But this is a logo update in service of a sentence. Roblox wanted grown-ups and investors to stop seeing a kids' game, and the gentlest possible redraw was the way to say so without alarming the kids.

In short: Same tilt, older audience.
