The Otto rebrand, explained

TeleVet was founded by Carter and Price Fallin, and TechCrunch reported that it began with a focus on equine health. When the pandemic hit, part of the product found a new use for curbside check in and telemedicine at veterinary clinics, and that is the association the name carried. By 2023 the business did much more: scheduling, after hours triage, payments and digital prescription refills, plus integrations with practice management systems such as Cornerstone, Neo and AVImark.

On 31 August 2023 the company announced a $43 million Series B and a new name at the same time. Mercury Fund, which led the $5 million Series A in December 2022, led again, joined by existing investor Boehringer Ingelheim and new investor Hill's Pet Nutrition, taking total venture funding to $48 million according to TechCrunch. The official release said the customer base had grown to over 8,000 veterinary professionals over two years, and that the core communication platform, Flow, had added payments, with Care membership plans launched in April.

The reasoning is unusually candid. TechCrunch quoted the company's Young saying TeleVet had become associated with a very old functionality that did not represent the true innovation in the company. Otto, she said, was a name they loved because much of the product is about automating tedious tasks so staff can focus on delivering healthcare, and because it is friendly and approachable. The official release framed it as reflecting the expansion beyond telemedicine into a streamlined, comprehensive customer experience, with Otto claiming it can free up to eight hours a week for veterinary teams.

This is a textbook case of a descriptive name expiring. TeleVet described a pandemic era feature, and a company selling practice wide workflow software could not keep wearing it. Otto is short, warm and easy to say at a front desk, and the nod to automation is a neat bit of wordplay without being cute. The weakness is distinctiveness: Otto is a common name, so the brand will need to earn its place in search results and in vets' memories. Pairing the rename with a funding round was smart timing, giving the new name a news hook rather than leaving it as a quiet swap. Whether it sticks depends on the product, but the logic is sound.

In short: Named for automation, not video calls.
