The MSNBC / MS NOW rebrand, explained

MSNBC's rename was announced in August 2025. CNBC reported, from an internal memo by Versant chief executive Mark Lazarus, that the political news network would be renamed My Source News Opinion World, or MS NOW, and drop the peacock from its branding. These were the first public facing changes in Versant's separation from Comcast's NBCUniversal. The Los Angeles Times later reported the switch date, 15 November, with promos carrying the tagline Same mission, new name.

The reason was corporate rather than editorial. In January, Lazarus had told staff the name would not change. But during transition planning, CNBC reported, NBCUniversal leaders decided MSNBC should take a new name to accelerate the distinction between the MSNBC and NBC News organisations. The LA Times put it more plainly: NBCUniversal did not want its brand attached to a network it did not control. MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler told staff that NBCUniversal had decided the brand required a new, separate identity, and that while the name was changing, who they were and what they did would not.

The context is a network building independence. CNBC reported about 100 new positions to stand up a newsroom separate from NBC News, including a first Washington bureau, while the LA Times noted that the opinion line up, from Rachel Maddow to Joe Scarborough, would make the move. Other Versant brands, including CNBC, were also losing the peacock, and Comcast was spinning the channels off, the Times said, because it saw a bleak future for mature cable outlets amid cord cutting.

Lazarus told staff the change was a chance to chart its own path and create distinct brand identities, despite the difficulty of marketing a new name in a fragmented media landscape.

This is a rebrand by eviction, and it shows. The acronym reads like a backronym that keeps the familiar MS, and the slogan reassures the audience that nothing important has changed. That is sensible damage control for a network whose value lies in its hosts rather than its letters. But dropping the peacock removes decades of borrowed authority from NBC News, and NOW is hardly a distinctive word for a news channel. MS NOW will succeed or fail on its people; the name is just a forwarding address.

In short: Same hosts, new address, no peacock.
