The Envato rebrand, explained

Key people: Milos Mitrovic (Logo designer) · Hichame Assi (CEO, Envato)

Envato, the Melbourne-founded marketplace for creative assets and templates, unveiled a new look, logo and website on 24 July 2024, in its 18th year. The rebrand coincided with completion of its acquisition by Shutterstock and focused on strengthening its creative subscription product, Creative Bloq and Creative Boom reported.

Rather than hire an agency, Envato's in-house creative team worked with people from its own contributor community. Chief marketing officer Noelle Kim said the company wanted to capture a sense of energy and a drive to do things differently. The logo was designed by Milos Mitrovic, a contributor based in Norway, and the sonic branding by New York composer K. Sparks, both outlets reported.

The new logo pairs a bold new typeface with a reimagined emblem inspired by the humble exclamation mark. The 'Creative Spark' is a fluid, marker-pen-style stroke, finished by a 'Dynamic Dot' representing each creative making their mark. The old green palette gave way to a vivid new Envato Green, which Creative Bloq noted was unintentionally in line with the Brat summer craze, supported by dark green, cream and purple. The sonic logo, Envato said, was meant to be authentic, passionate, dynamic and creative. The website gained a modernised interface and better usability. Chief executive Hichame Assi called the result bold and vibrant, and said it was about living the brand's values, not just a new look.

Creative Bloq called it a masterclass in a playful refresh that does not rely on fleeting design trends.

Commissioning the logo from the marketplace's own contributors is a genuinely good idea and the best argument for the platform. The mark itself is cheerful but generic; marker swooshes and dots are the stock-asset vocabulary Envato sells. The acid green is what people will remember, and ironically it is the most trend-bound thing here.

In short: A spark and a dot, by a contributor.
