The PETRONAS rebrand, explained

PETRONAS introduced the refreshed logo in a media release dated 10 June 2013. It described the change as part of a group-wide exercise to make its corporate icon more contemporary while building on the equity of the brand, and tied it to the group positioning reimagining energy.

The structure stayed. According to the release, the original 1974 logo combines an oil drop with the letter P, a solid circle at the centre for the full value chain of oil and gas, and emerald green for the seas and land. The 2013 version adds softer curves to the drop, which the company says depict a continuous flow. The PETRONAS name was moved from beside the drop to below it and the letters were sharpened.

PETRONAS calls the result its third-generation logo. "In essence, the refreshed logo symbolises the growth and progression of the PETRONAS brand," the release said. The before file here is the header logo from petronas.com.my in late 2012, and the after file is the same site's header in January 2014, cropped to leave out the reimagining energy banner beside it.

In short: Same oil drop, gentler curves, and the name moves downstairs.
