## The rebrand, explained

In April 2026 Microsoft retired the Microsoft Gaming name in favour of Xbox, saying the old label described its structure but not its ambition. Its announcement leaned on history, from the first console in 2001 and Xbox Live in 2002 to friends lists and achievements, and promised openness to creators of every size. A new logo arrived the same day, which Adweek counted as the eighth badge in the brand's 25-year history.

The rename came under new leadership. GamesRadar reported the division's new leaders admitting players were frustrated with the console and its pricing, with one saying we have to be honest about where we are, and Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma set out a new vision that included interest in acquisitions.

The 2019 identity was stark: a flat sphere and XBOX wordmark in black and white. The new one reverses that. The sphere returns in a glossy, three-dimensional radium green, and the XBOX wordmark goes green too. The effect deliberately recalls the brand's early years, which is why Adweek framed it as a nostalgic return to the brand's roots.

Microsoft did not credit an outside design studio in its announcement.

Fans welcomed it. IGN called the logo stylish, Creative Bloq explained why it felt instantly nostalgic, and the r/xbox thread on the reveal was largely celebratory, though many tied their enthusiasm to hopes for better pricing and PC support rather than the logo itself.

IGN noted how the logo arrived: on social media the night after a mission statement from Asha Sharma and Matt Booty, under the same blunt title, We Are Xbox. Sharma answered with a row of green hearts, and the design itself needed no explaining. It is the classic Xbox neon green brought back with a glossier modern finish, a mark built to say that the console brand, not Microsoft Gaming, is in charge again. Nostalgia is the whole strategy here, and for once the colour carries it without help.

Going back to 3D shading after a decade of flat design is a bold choice, and a fan-pleasing one. It reads as a statement of identity aimed at people who grew up with the original console. The risk is that gloss dates quickly; the 2019 mark was colder but cleaner. Here, emotional recognition clearly won over minimalism.

In short: Green and glossy again: nostalgia as brand strategy.
