## The rebrand, explained

Microsoft introduced Windows 11 on 24 June 2021, promising a calmer system where everything from the Start button and taskbar to each sound, font and icon was designed intentionally. The logo followed that brief.

Chief product officer Panos Panay led the release, the first new Windows in six years, and set the tone: a sense of calm, a clear map of where to go. Windows 11 shipped on 5 October 2021 in over 190 countries.

Windows 8 and 10 had used a single window drawn in perspective, angled as if seen from the side. Windows 11 drops the perspective. The mark is now four equal squares in a flat grid, the same structure as the four-colour Microsoft corporate logo, rendered in a single blue. Microsoft's designers explained the logic simply: they looked at the Microsoft logo and turned it blue, the colour people most associate with Windows. That electric blue became a through line across the system, from the logo to the Bloom wallpaper.

Microsoft presented the logo as its own work, with no outside agency named.

The logo's explanation came in a Microsoft video that PC Gamer headlined with its most quotable line, we looked at the Microsoft logo and turned it blue; blue, the designers said, is the colour people most associate with Windows. The video spent more time on Bloom, the default wallpaper that unfolds the shape across the desktop. The internet was less patient: a Reddit meme imagining Windows 12 as a blue square and Windows 14 as the void drew tens of thousands of upvotes, and the commonest complaint was that it now looked like the Microsoft logo with the asymmetry removed.

Microsoft's Asia newsroom described Bloom as a symbol for the new operating system that reflects its possibilities, and tied it to other updates, including the Segoe UI font and a startup sound reworked to be softer, lighter, calmer and more effortless. The design lead framed each version as an evolution in how people use the software, with the user put at the centre. That is a lot of meaning to load onto a wallpaper, but it shows where the identity really sits now: in an abstract flower and a chime, while the four squares just do the labelling.

How-To Geek's history of every Windows logo shows the arc: from the waving four-colour flag that established the colours and lasted decades, through the angled window of Windows 8 and 10, to this. The Windows 11 mark is the plainest of them. It is also the most honest. It admits Windows is a Microsoft product first, and its softness matches the gentler design language of the system it introduces.

In short: The Microsoft logo, in blue. Plain, coherent and a little dull.
