## The rebrand, explained

Winamp was one of the defining apps of the MP3 era, known for retro skins and animated visualisers. BleepingComputer recalled that official development stalled after version 5.666 in 2013, and that after a 5.8 build leaked in 2018 the owners published it themselves while promising big plans that never shipped. In November 2021 the website changed: BleepingComputer, citing Vosveteit, reported a redesigned winamp.com, a new logo for the player and a sign up for an upcoming beta test. Head of product development Jeremy Scheppers told the outlet the team was excited about the relaunch.

TechRadar framed the move as the arrival of Winamp for the next generation, a completely remastered app from owner Radionomy, which bought Winamp in 2014. The site promised more than a player: a place for fans and artists to connect, with net radio and podcasts, and a pledge to give artists and audio creators control over their content and a fairer income. TechRadar pointed out that a plain media player would be an anachronism in the age of streaming, which explains the pivot toward a platform.

Both outlets were sceptical. TechRadar reminded readers that in 2018 Radionomy announced a new version for 2019 that never emerged, and advised them to remain sceptical but watch the space. Readers under the BleepingComputer story were blunter: one said the logo looked so much like HP's recent logo that there could be IP issues, another counted this as the fourth website redesign and third logo since the acquisition.

That last point is the real critique. A logo is a promise, and Winamp had already spent its nostalgia on promises. Replacing the mark before the product exists signals a marketing project, not a software one, and if readers saw HP in it, the new mark was not doing much to carry the old player's personality forward. Heritage brands relaunching in a crowded market usually lean into what people remember; Winamp did the opposite, and asked its fans to trust a new face with an old track record of missed dates. The new identity is tidy enough. It just cannot do the work that only a shipped product can.

In short: A new face before a new product.
