## The rebrand, explained

President Brian Sandoval unveiled the new identity at the 2026 State of the University address on 20 October 2026, held in the newly opened Wolf Pack Fieldhouse. The university says the brand came out of an 18-month process it ran itself, covering market research, testing of logo concepts and new messaging, along with a campaign line, Where World Changers Get to Work.

The new primary logo, called the Interlocked, weaves a U through an N. According to the university, it draws on the historic seal and typography, reveals Nevada's state silhouette through the strong northwest-to-southeast diagonal of the letters, and embeds a star as a nod to Reno for people less familiar with the state. It replaces the Block N, a white collegiate N on a navy square that the old brand guide called the logo mark. The navy and the slab-serif collegiate feel carry over, so the change reads as a redraw rather than a break.

2 News Nevada reported Sandoval's reason: brand research showed few people outside Nevada recognised the Block N as the university's logo. He said the team went through about 30 iterations to get it right. Alongside the Interlocked, the athletics spirit mark was redrawn as the Nevada Wolf, with a trio system of running, leaping and standing wolves. The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that the wolf work was done by Las Vegas agency R&R Partners; no agency was named for the Interlocked mark.

Rollout is phased over several years, starting with recruitment materials and digital channels, with old logos replaced in normal cycles. Athletic director Stephanie Rempe said the new logo would be on football helmets the following Saturday. Reaction on X was loud and mixed, much of it about the wolf, with some fans calling the change hideous and others mourning the old sport wolf.

The Interlocked solves the stated problem. A lone N says nothing outside the state, while an interlocking U-N with Nevada's shape inside is at least specific. It is also busy at small sizes, and the state outline only appears once someone points it out. That is fine for a seal-like mark, but expect the wolf to do most of the work on merch.

In short: The N gets a U, and the state hides in the gap.
