## The rebrand, explained

Trainline is a train and coach travel platform that brings together routes, fares and timetables from operators across Europe and Asia. In 2015 a rebrand by Studio Blackburn had dropped the and .com from Thetrainline.com, moved to mint green and introduced a more distinctive t, because, as its commercial director put it then, the brand looked tired and old.

In December 2019 the logo changed again, more modestly. The new mark is a simple green symbol that combines a heart and interlinking journeys, with a tick worked in for positivity, set beside the Trainline wordmark. It rolled out across the website and mobile app, and Trainline's brand guidelines still describe the logo in exactly those terms.

Trainline said the symbol was more human and reflected the business as it is today. Its announcement framed the logo around purpose: the aim was to make train and coach travel easier, and to encourage people to make more environmentally sustainable travel choices. Simply put, it said, we are a business with heart and we want our logo to reflect this.

It helps to remember what the 2019 symbol replaced. Design Week reported in 2015 that the earlier t had been designed to symbolise routes and crossing points, the meeting of smart technology and closeness to customers, and that dropping the .com was a conscious response to mobile growth. The chief executive said then that the company had been changing with its customers while its brand had not. Four years later the routes idea survived, folded into interlinking journeys, but now it had to share space with a heart and a tick.

Transform magazine reported the change in its weekly rebrand roundup, but it drew little debate otherwise.

Adding a symbol made practical sense for an app-first business that needed an icon. The symbol itself tries to say three things at once, heart, journeys and tick, and ends up saying none of them clearly. It is a values statement turned into a mark, and it reads like one.

In short: A useful app icon asked to carry three metaphors at once.
