## The rebrand, explained

Threads launched in 2023 as Instagram's text-based companion, and its first identity leaned so heavily on Instagram Sans that, as coverage put it, it struggled to stand apart from its parent. By 2026 the app had grown past 500 million monthly active users, and Meta brought in Studio NARI to give it a voice of its own.

NARI kept the @-inspired symbol, built from looping lines, and evolved it rather than reinventing it. The bigger change is the wordmark. A device the studio calls the Trending Chisel adds directional cuts and controlled contrast where the eye already expects movement, at the transitions between stems and curves, and holds back everywhere else. The idea is to translate the speed of live conversation into the letterforms. In campaigns the chisel becomes more expressive through motion and type, and the wordmark is meant as the seed of a wider custom typographic language.

Connor Hayes, who runs Threads, said the brand should feel built for conversation and always in motion. The design press read the update as Threads separating itself visually from Instagram while staying recognizably part of Meta's family. The wordmark leans forward and is heavier than before, and the @ glyph is drawn as one continuous line.

Studio NARI's credit is reported by both It's Nice That and The Brand Identity.

Social Media Today had Meta's own account of the motive. Threads chief Connor Hayes wanted the brand to feel like the product, built for conversation and always in motion, and design lead Christopher Clare said that almost three years after launching as an Instagram side project, the app was due a standalone era. The leaning italics stand for forward energy, the heavier weight helps the icon hold its own beside other apps and away from Instagram, and the mark is still one continuous line. The subtext is commercial: Mark Zuckerberg wants a billion users, and X remained the benchmark to beat.

The mark leaked before launch to mixed first reactions, and the conversation shifted once Meta explained the thinking. The result is subtle, maybe too subtle at small sizes. But it does the one thing Threads needed: it no longer looks like a feature of Instagram.

In short: Threads finally sounds like itself, even if it whispers.
