## The rebrand, explained

In May 2024 Talkspace debuted its first rebrand since launching in 2012. Fast Company reported that the new look carried a clear message: mental healthcare should feel approachable, not intimidating. The company wanted to move the idea of therapy away from crisis intervention and toward a habitual practice available to anyone.

Before redesigning, the designers audited the category and found the same motifs everywhere: speech bubbles, clasped hands, people staring into screens, and cold, muted colors that could make platforms feel distant, even like a sterile doctor's office. They also found that Talkspace's turquoise was what made it most recognizable, so they kept it and built a warm palette around it, with lemon, orange and maroon accents.

Talkspace's own announcement describes the pieces. A new T symbol with shifting, asymmetric borders frames members and providers, reflecting the many ways therapy makes space to make sense of things. The refined logo leads with a crisp capital T, unites the words talk and space, and loses the speech bubble that defined the original. The typeface moves from heavy to light weights as a picture of the journey to clarity, and the palette names include Present Pink, Gratitude Green and Optimist Orange. Fast Company added that the type uses the rounded serif Exposure and that the photography shows real members rather than stock models.

The brand also had baggage to shed. Fast Company recalled a 2016 investigation by The Verge that reported a list of concerns from participating therapists, and a 2020 New York Times article that raised questions about client privacy, while demand for the app rose sharply during the pandemic. Chief marketing officer Katelyn Watson said a main goal was to elevate the voices and faces of members so anyone can see themselves in therapy, and described the identity as celebrating the normalization of therapy and wider insurance coverage. A friendlier face does not settle those old questions, but it signals a company that wants to be judged as a mainstream healthcare provider.

Dropping the speech bubble is the key move. It tied Talkspace to texting a therapist, a single feature, when the company now offers psychiatry, couples and teen therapy.

The warm palette and real faces are sensible too. In a category that defaults to clinical calm, warmth is the differentiator.

In short: Out of the speech bubble.
