## The rebrand, explained

David Ellison revealed the name on 2 October 2026, days before the 110 billion dollar merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery closed. Deadline reported that the combined company would be known simply as Skydance. When the deal closed on 6 October, NBC News reported, Warner Bros. employees logged on to find a new logo, Skydance in capitals and underlined, while A Skydance Corporation appeared beneath the famous water tower in Burbank and at the New York office.

Ellison framed the choice as protective of the brands underneath. In his post, quoted by Deadline, he said the company never wanted a corporate identity to diminish, alter or overshadow Paramount or Warner Bros., but a name that gave the combined company an identity of its own while keeping the studios and their brands in the spotlight. In their Day 1 memo, quoted by NBC News, Ellison and co chief executive Ynon Kreiz wrote that this was not a merger of convenience and that they wanted a name that looks forward rather than one that simply splices together the past.

Deadline added the legal context. After Skydance bought Paramount in August 2025, the parent became Paramount, a Skydance Corporation and later Paramount Skydance Corporation. The settlement of antitrust suits by 12 states and the Writers Guild required separation of Paramount and Warner Bros. operations in several areas and tried to prevent either studio being dissolved, so a name appearing to favour one partner could have been a problem. One consequence, the outlet noted, is that Discovery no longer has its name in lights. NBC News recorded the backdrop: opposition from actors and writers, a commitment to release a set number of films each year, and expected layoffs.

Ellison's own line was that what was once the peak is now just the beginning.

As an umbrella name, Skydance solves the politics neatly: neither studio wins, and the founder's company sits on top. That is exactly why it grates. A century of Paramount and Warner Bros. history now answers to the acquirer's name, stamped on the water tower on day one. The wordmark itself is plain, which is wise next to two of the most famous logos in film. Whether Skydance means anything to audiences will depend on what the merged company makes, not on the underline.

In short: Two studios, one founder's name on top.
