## The rebrand, explained

In June 2025 Shutterstock unveiled a new brand identity built on the idea that it is the universal ingredient for creativity. The company's announcement described a refreshed visual and verbal identity covering a family of brands including GIPHY, and positioned it alongside new products such as Generative AI Pro and its pending merger with Getty Images.

The Verge zeroed in on the logo. The o in Shutterstock had long been drawn as a camera viewfinder; the new version adds ripples above and below it, which the company said signal the impact of creative work spreading outward.

DesignTAXI described the wider system. The familiar red box gives way to a ripple motif used in two shapes: a solid circle called the Catalyst, standing for the spark of an idea, and a rippled one called the Impact, standing for its effect. Typography was pared back to a practical sans serif, and the palette moved away from Shutterstock red to tones taken from office tools such as highlighters, sticky notes and manila folders, meant to feel tactile rather than techy. New rules define when designs stay undecorated. On the product side the rebrand tied together the stock library, Shutterstock Studios production, a Generative AI Pro tool for businesses, licensing of rights-cleared datasets for AI training, and GIPHY's advertising.

The release frames the rebrand around a company that has grown beyond its stock photo origins into a family of brands and generative AI products. Universal ingredient is meant to cover all of that.

The ripple idea is sound in principle. A viewfinder pins the brand to photography, and ripples suggest something leaving the frame and travelling outward. Whether that reads at favicon size is another question; at small sizes the ripples will most likely disappear.

The bigger issue is timing. Rebranding while a merger with your largest rival is pending is a bet that the name survives the deal. The identity is competent, but its future depends on boardroom decisions, not design.

In short: Ripples around the viewfinder.
