## The rebrand, explained

Reddit's brand had been loosely defined since its 2017 app launch and desktop redesign. In November 2023 the company said it wanted a brand that was more integrated, intuitive and global, built around the thing that makes Reddit distinct: conversation.

The timing was loaded. The rollout began on Nov 29, 2023, months after a bitter fight between moderators and the company over API changes affecting third-party apps, and amid reports of an IPO; Reddit went public in March 2024. Chief marketing officer Roxy Young told Fast Company that since she arrived in 2017 the brand had been like a house you keep adding onto, until the foundation was straining. Brand creative lead Tavish, who had also drawn the 2016 logo, introduced the work to users himself on r/reddit.

Snoo, the alien mascot, is the most visible change. It gets a 3D form, opposable thumbs for the first time, and a menu of emoji-like poses, and the logo now places Snoo inside a conversation bubble. That bubble becomes the system's core device, stretching to fit a subreddit name or a long comment and stacking vertically to hold images and headlines. Type is entirely new: Reddit Display, whose counters are shaped like little speech bubbles and which sets the wordmark, and Reddit Sans, a workhorse with a large x-height and disambiguated letterforms that Reddit intends to open-source. OrangeRed is joined by GuavaPink, LimeGreen, BananaYellow and JuniperBlue.

Pentagram did the work, with partner Natasha Jen leading, as Fast Company and Creative Bloq both reported.

Pentagram's Natasha Jen admitted the tension in the brief: long-term brand goals on one side, a community used to remixing the brand freely on the other. Reddit's answer was to hand material back. Snoo ships as a rigged, poseable 3D model in open-source Blender, and the Reddit Sans family is free. Reaction was mixed, read by many as a polished, corporate turn timed for investors, and TechCrunch noted the new logo arriving alongside broken comments on the site.

The bubble is an obvious idea, which is exactly why it works: it says conversation at any size and gives the brand a container for almost anything. The 3D Snoo is friendlier and more toy-like than the flat original, and some will miss its scrappiness. But for a company preparing to go public, a coherent, accessible system was overdue, and this one is genuinely well built.

In short: An obvious idea, executed thoroughly. Snoo grew up and got thumbs.
