## The rebrand, explained

pixiv, the Japanese platform for posting illustration, manga and novels, launched in 2007 and now reports more than 100 million registered users in over 230 countries and regions. Operator pixiv Inc. announced on 28 January 2025 that it was renewing the service logo for the first time in 16 years, with the new mark rolling out gradually from that day. The company explained that the way people use pixiv had changed greatly since launch, with more use on smartphones and tablets and more users outside Japan, and that it wanted to offer a service where creators worldwide could keep creating more freely and enjoyably.

Impress Watch's editorial team reported the design brief. The theme was Asobi wo mitsukeyou, roughly let's find play. The geometric design is based on the digits 0 and 1, a reference to pixiv being a service delivered in digital space. Against that rigour, the logo adds slight wobbles: part of the initial p is missing and corners are rounded off, which the company said expresses the rich human creativity that finds unexpected play in creative work.

The launch came with a promotional video on pixiv's official YouTube channel and a posting campaign themed pixiv Park, where all our likes gather, running until 10 March 2025, with three illustrators commissioned to draw new images for the occasion. The company said it wanted to support and accelerate the hobbies, discoveries and encounters that its users have found on the platform.

The concept is neat: binary digits for the medium, human imperfection for the people making the work. The chipped p is the part that earns its keep, a small irregularity that gives an otherwise clean geometric wordmark a hand drawn wink appropriate to an art community. The risk is that the idea is invisible. Few users will see zeros and ones in the letters, and rounded geometric type is the default of every app redesign of the decade.

In short: Zeros, ones and a chipped p.
